Ylang Ylang means ‘flower of flowers’ and has been referred to as the poor man’s jasmine. It is exotic, sweet and known for its aphrodisiacal properties. The tropical tree grows up to 65 feet tall with large fragrant flowers that grow in shades of pink, yellow or mauve. The yellow flowers are preferred for their essential oil and are extracted by way of steam distillation. The first distillation is considered ‘extra’ or the best grade of the essential oil.
It is indigenous to tropical Asia but the most prized oil comes from Madagascar and the Comoro Islands and in Indonesia, the flower petals are scattered across the matrimonial bed on the wedding night.
